Cotton

ADAH # 93.343.1

Ada Chitwood Jones (1903–1997) was born in Arkansas and moved to DeKalb County with her family in 1910. During the 1930s, Ada’s sister-in-law, Ruby Mae Jacoway Chitwood, worked for the W.B. Davis hosiery factory in Fort Payne. There, she was able to acquire sock “tops” from the factory’s showroom after they were no longer needed. Ada used the tops to create two quilts. The quilt backing came from the Agricultural Extension office in Auburn. They distributed the fabric as part of a program to aid farm women.
